Indonesia GPS Tracking

GPS Tracking also known as AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location) is a tracking system, which consist of a tracker unit (tracker) that attached to vehicle and an application that lay in monitoring center. It’s combination of GPS technology with GPRS (General Packet Radio of Service) technology or satellite as its media delivery of data.

Tracker attached at vehicle will accept coordinates from GPS satellites, Coordinates that accepted by the tracker will be delivered to monitoring application through media of GPRS or satellite (depended from type of tracker) and monitoring application will translate vehicle position along with all status of vehicles [e.g.: door open/close; engine on/close] at a digital map in computer monitoring screen.

In Indonesia This GPS tracking system was begin in 2005. Many company come in to this field, these are several of the list:

What is Deferential GPS?

Deferential GPS is a method to enhance GPS accuracy. Usually DGPS can we found at harbor it function to help ship navigation to dock. DGPS is very useful to located reef or shipwrek

DGPS Correction is broadcast from GPS that have RTCM (Radio Technical Commission Maritime). RTCM is GPS standard format for all GPS to sent and receive data from one GPS to another. RTCM has many version from 1.2 until now 3.1. RTCM version 3.1 has ability to enhance accuracy with Glonass satellite.

Navigation GPS that has accuracy maximal 6 meters can be enhance to 1-2 meters if GPS get Correction signal from DGPS. And for mapping can obtain below one-meter accuracy.

SoloMap for Nokia 6110

GPS Application for Nokia 6110.

Many News papers advertised Nokia 6110 that sold with SoloMap. That’s make me curious and finally I borrow my friend’s Nokia 6110 to make review here.

SoloMap has complicated installation steps and maps are required 230Mb for Jawa and Bali.
The unique of this Application is it has trial 10.000 days. The difference trial and full version, in trial version cannot connected with GPS module which have embed in Nokia 6110, so user can not plot his/her real time position in digital map

The different of this application is the existence of Solo Service feature where we can book a taxi, see Cinema 21’s schedule and real time traffic camera.

Unhappily only Cinema schedule is able to work. After I asked, Nokia said these features can run in next version.

Other features generally are same with other GPS applications that are Routing, Navigate, Find Street/Poi/Nearby POI, etc.

When buy Nokia 6110, it has include CD and license voucher. After installation, this application requires registration through GPRS.
User Interface is user-friendly enough, but the process is slow when moving the map

GPS Navigation for Nokia 9500 and 9300

GPS Application Map Mobile for me is more tend to City Map Application, because there are no navigation features in this application. (Routing, compass, 2D or 3D view, etc)

With this application we just can see digital map in our Nokia Communicator.

The main feature is SENT POST that is user can send waypoint and insert brief message regarding the waypoint.

Others Navigation standard futures are:

* FIND where user can find for the street name at one particular area

* NEARBY POI where user can look for waypoints around its place

* CREATE WAYPOINT/ WAYPOINTS for open and add new waypoint

* TRACKING this feature need additional appliance to be able to monitoring a vehicle

* FULL SCREEN MODE, screen display mode

Lacks of this Application are:

* No "map auto loading” feature, so if you traveling, you have to know where reside are you in, so you can open map manually

* Inexistence of “Routing” feature, so user can only make waypoint of his/her destination. And user’s position will be drag by straight line to the destination in digital map.

* No 2D or 3D display

Map Available for towns of Java and Bali, e.g.: Jakarta, Tanggerang, Bekasi, Bogor, Ciajur, Cirebon, Depok, Demak Semarang, Yogyakarta, Sukabumi, Surabaya, Sidoarjo, Denpasar, and many more

And one more thing, this GPS application just can be connected to Nokia GPS Module LD-3W.

Brief Introduction About GPS

GPS known as Global Positioning System is currently the only fully functional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). More than two dozens GPS satellites are in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), transmitting signals allowing GPS receivers to determine the receiver's location, speed and direction.

Since its first experimental satellite was launched in 1978, GPS has become an indispensable aid to navigation around the world, and an important tool for map-making and land surveying. GPS also provides a precise time reference used in many applications including scientific study of earthquakes, and synchronization of telecommunications networks.

How it works?

The principle behind GPS is that receivers are able to use the technique of “Trilateration” to calculate their coordinates by measuring the time taken for signals from various GPS satellites to reach them.
The GPS software will account for any irregularities in the signal strength and clock.
Differences between itself and the GPS satellite network by using signals from four separate satellites to improve accuracy.
Usually the coordinates are then used to locate the GPS device on a map, which is either displayed to the user or used as a basis for calculating routes, navigation, or as input into mapping programs. For example, specific coordinates can be stored as waypoints allowing the user to retrace their steps by calculating the direction and distance to each waypoint that they have stored
.

GPS Applications

  • Outdoor activities E.g.: hiking etc
  • Survey
  • Vehicle Tracking System
  • Military
  • Aviation
  • Navigation
  • Security
  • Environment E.g.: detection of birds’ migrations
  • And many more…
